Garden Journal: August 2021

The beginning of the month saw a big renovation job at our house. The old yellow siding was replaced with grey. While this work was going on it meant a fair bit of disruption to the gardens.

The biggest disruption was to the trellis garden, where things had to be moved including the gate tree, the double metal trellis and Herb’s Place. The top image below is how it looked prior to the work. The bottom picture below shows how it looked with things removed.

The trellis garden as it looks about mid way through August. This area will certainly be a work in progress for awhile. Instead of the gate tree there is now an old metal bakers rack which came from a shed clear out at the family trailer.

The bench area looks bare. The metal trellis over the bench almost fell apart when removed so it has gone to the scrap yard. The rose bush was cut right back and is slowly starting to regrow. For now it just pokes through the slats on the old bench. Not sure what sort of trellis will go there to support it. The wooden trellis that supported the scarlet runner beans was replaced with bamboo stakes right now, again I’m not sure what will go there.

The gate tree got moved and fastened onto a smaller gate at the end of the garage path. The 2 old crows that used to be over the garage door also found a new home on top of the gate tree. Wondering how I made the gate tree, be sure to check this out. The last picture on that post shows the gate tree leaning against the old yellow siding in the trellis garden.

August 2021 blooms at craftygardener.ca

Despite the high heat and humidity the plants continued to bloom – various daylilies, coleus, hosta, and yellow loosestrife.

I’ve been watching different types of fungus grow on some old tree stumps at the back of the tree garden. These stumps were collected from the landfill so I really don’t know what sort of trees they are.

But the black knot fungus grows on fruit trees so at least one of them must be a fruit tree of some sort. Nature never fails to amaze me.

four o'clocks in bloom July 2020 at craftygardener.ca

The 4 o’clocks have been blooming since the beginning of the month, such pretty colours. Soon it will be time to dig the tubers for next year.

Let's Streak hosta at craftygardener.ca

I think the Let’s Streak is my favourite hosta, with blooms of purple/mauve edged in white that bloom in August. I do tend to cut off the flower stalks of some of the other hosta as I think the plant looks untidy.

cardinal feathers found at craftygardener.ca

I’m a collector of bird feathers and frequently find lots in the garden. My best find had to be the two cardinal feathers this month, as I have never found any before.

I hope you had a good month of August in the garden. See more of my garden journal posts for 2021.
